R Beckett, 35. First took out a licence in 1999
Ralph is Wiltshire based and the club’s choice to represent the Lambourn/Southern area as a young and up and coming trainer. A capable handler who is not averse to laying one out for a touch, and when doing so is never far off the mark. Best horses to date; Johnny Jumpup and Penkenna Princess, winner of the Fred Darling Stakes.
A W Carroll, 50. First took out a licence in 1995
As a former jumps jockey, Tony has been involved with both codes since setting up as a trainer in 1995, but recently the flat racing side of his Warwickshire-based operation has expanded considerably, and 2004 saw him shatter his previous best totals both in terms of number of wins and prize money. The all-weather plays a big part in Tony's success.
P Chapple-Hyam, 44. First took out a licence in 1991 and renewed his UK licence in 2004 after a four year spell in Hong Kong.
A classic winning Newmarket-based trainer with Rodrigo de Triano (2000gns), Dr Devious ( Derby) and Authorized (Derby). Peter has begun his second stint training in the UK in brilliant fashion, winning five pattern races in his first year back. This achievement is even more commendable when it is considered that the most expensive of the pattern winners cost a mere 30,000gns.
R Fahey, 41. First took out a licence in 1993
North Yorkshire-based Richard is on a serious upward curve given the results of the last two years; fifty wins in 2003 and seventy-seven in 2004, the latter figure placing him in seventh place in the trainers’ table. Added to which, the median rating of horses in Richard’s care is easily the lowest amongst the top ten stables.
R C Guest, 42. First took out a licence in his own name in 2004, after several years of working as assistant to Norman Mason
Richard is a Nottinghamshire based Grand National winning jockey who realised the dream of training a Cheltenham Festival winner in his first year of training, when Our Armageddon won the Cathcart Challenge Cup. David Lyons was Richard’s agent for a year or so when he started out in the game, and describes him as “A huge talent. It has been a delight to see him scale the heights of his profession and it will be a particular pleasure for me to have him train some of our club horses.”
Evan Williams, 38, first took out a licence in 2004
Evan is very much the coming Welsh wizard of the training world. Taking other people's cast offs and turning them into winners, and winners on a regular basis. Just wait until he starts getting better and better bloodstock and see what he achieves. A confident and likeable individual who has has the wisdom to give the majority of his rides to two up and coming jockeys, Christian Williams and Paul Moloney.
K A Ryan, 40. First took out a licence in 1997
The Ryan stable in North Yorkshire is developing all the time, and last year Kevin’s sixty-seven winners were worth more than £370,000, up thirteen and over £100,000 on his previous best. The general quality of the string has also improved, with the median rating rising to 72, which is an impressive figure given that the majority of his eighty horses were inexpensive and moderately bred. Won his first Group 1 when taking the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.
